FAQ

How do I become a member?

If there is a SOAR chapter already formed at your school, please contact the officers listed on our chapters page. If there is not one, you may start your own chapter.

How do I start a chapter?

Submit a form on our contacts page, and we will reach out to you within 48 hours.

Can I become a member without being a part of a chapter?

Currently, there is not a way to become a SOAR member without a local chapter. However, there are many ways you can help without being a soar member. See the next question for more information.

How can I help if I am not currently a member?

We host many events open to the public. You are welcome to attend one of these events to donate or volunteer to help through the sign up links on the upcoming events page on this site. If you are not in the Houston area, you may still contribute with a tax-deductible donation, sponsor our organization, or find events to participate in hosted by a chapter near you.

Do you award volunteer hours?

Yes! Each chapter has their own set of requirements, but members will earn volunteer hours for participating in various events and contributing to SOAR as a whole. At the end of the school year, ask your chapter officers for a volunteering certificate, and they can contact the Executive Board to obtain certificates for their members. Additionally, all SOAR hours count towards the President's Volunteer Service Award. Find out more here.

How do I sign up for events?

If you are a part of a local chapter, your officers will likely send out texts or emails with instructions to sign up. If you are in the Houston area and want to participate in Executive events, check the Upcoming Events page for links and details.

Do I get a SOAR t-shirt?

Each established chapter gets free Executive Soar Above shirts for their members at the beginning of the year (limited availability!) Ask your chapter officers to contact the Executive Board to request shirts and sizes for their members if you have not received one.

How do I become a board member?

Currently, we are not looking for new Executive board members. If you would like to start your own chapter, you may choose your own officers. You may also contact existing chapters to ask what their policy is on electing or choosing officers each year.

Can a SOAR member or their family apply for the Soar to College Scholarship?

Yes. Applications will be viewed anonymously, so the relationship of the applicants to SOAR members will not affect the result. Recipients of the scholarship may or may not have relation with SOAR members.

Is my contribution tax deductible?

Yes. SOAR is a certified 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Any donations over $200 will be granted a tax-deductible receipt. Please contact us if you have additional questions or if you have not received your receipt.
